Atlantis by that name has no real historical reference, despite being mentioned by Plato. However, some have connected the legend to any of several ancient coastal or island cities whose ruins are now underwater.

Many people believe that the historical basis for the Atlantis myth was the Minoan Civilization on the island of Thera in the Mediterranean (now called Santorini).
The Minoan eruption is a key marker for the Bronze Age chronology of the Eastern Mediterranean world.
The Island exploded in a huge volcanic eruption that destroyed the Minoan civilization across the whole Mediterranean somewhere between 1627 BCE and 1600 BCE.

Yes, but actually no.

The Atlantis mentioned by Plato was most likely made up by the man, but there are quite a few submerged cities from various areas & eras.

This website lists a few ; thetravel.c om/15-cities-completely-submerged-underwater-now-and-10-which-will-be-soon/

Not to mention some pieces of land have been submerged in the years, such as Doggerland in the North Sea.

Well no-one can be certain that it isn't real.

It's mainly a myth, but to me it is a real continent and finding Atlantis would be massive because that would tell us whether or not the gods Zeus, Hera, Poseidon etc. are real.

Now don't get me wrong, it could be Thera or it could be just a lie but think of this:

- Percy Fawcett

- If Atlantis is not real why would Plato lie about it?

- And finally Edgar Cacey's prophecy.

Answer

Wow. Thank you so much. However, I have one thing to say: Your second bullet point, "If Atlantis is not real why would Plato lie about it?". During that time that Plato came up with the Atlantis theory, his life was pretty chaotic. Some people think that he came up with the idea to get his mind of of stress and whatnot. However, it would be really awesome if Zeus, Hera, Posidon, and Artemis were real!

Atlantis is suppose to be a chunk of land that connects Europe to America. I would have to say somewhere in the middle of the present day Atlantic Ocean. Some say it is now ruled by Poseidon under the sea.

There are several locations hypothesized to be the actual location of the Lost City of Atlantis. Some of them are: Sardinia, Cicily, Malta, Morocco, Turkey, Cuba, Scandinavia and many others.

There are many who believe that Atlantis was an island, not a continent, that sank long ago. Some theorize that it was actually one of a number of ancient islands that were destroyed (or at least their human populations destroyed) by natural disasters in the long ago, but known by another name, and that the actual Legend of Atlantis, penned by (I believe) Plato, was a combination of several of these.

What caused the lost city of Atlantis to sink?

The sinking of the lost city of Atlantis is a mythical story rather than a historical event. According to Plato's dialogues, Atlantis was punished by the gods for their arrogance and corruption, causing it to be submerged underwater.
