Also, the film bears heavy similiarities to The Epic of Sundiata Keita, which took place in 13rd century Africa. However, the filmmakers never admitted to being inspired by the story while producing the movie.

Disney's The Lion King was based on William Shakerspeares's fictional play/book Hamlet, and on stroeis from the Bible, such as the story of Moses. These are revealed in the documentaries released on the 2003 DVD release and likely on the 1995 Laserdisc and 2011 Blu-Ray.
