According to the books, the Irish wolfhound in antiquity was the reason why elk, boar and wolves are no longer existant in Ireland. So tremendous was their strength, and stealth-like attack, combined with their great size, they were often presented as gifts among the Ancient Romans who looked upon them as a wonder of nature, as they were used to fight lions and bears in arenas. According to an old dog book I have in my collection, it also claimed that the mastiff was no match for the Wolfhounds power. In short, if the dog was raised in the mindset to fight, there is very few dogs I can think of to actually beat the Irish Wolfhound.
