In the movie Aladdin, the main character Aladdin's three wishes were: 1) to become a prince in order to win Princess Jasmine's heart, 2) to be saved from drowning after Jafar tries to kill him, and 3) to set the Genie free from his lamp, thus fulfilling his promise to grant him freedom with his final wish.
In the animated movie, Aladdin had three wishes. His first wish was that he wanted to become a prince. In his second wish, he asked for his life to be saved after he was accidently cast in the ocean. His final and unselfish wish was to free the genie from the lamp.
Technically Aladdin only had 2 wishes!!! 1. to become a prince, 2 free the genie. The genie took it that Aladdin would wish to be saved from drowning but the wish was never asked for. I know its knit picking but its the way I see it.

They couldn't make it that easy; if they did there would be no conflict. Aladdin would be almost omnipotent, save a few taboo wishes. No one would be able to defy Aladdin because he could just wish them away. They would have nothing to make a movie about.
He has to use one of his three wishes to wish the Genie free.

Aladdin: the Return of Jafar Aladdin and the King of Thieves
It's not necessarily that the Sultan didn't want Princess Jasmine to marry Aladdin, the predicament they faced was that according to the Law, a Princess can only marry a Prince. That is why Aladdin wishes to become a Prince. However, by the end of the movie, it is agreed that despite of the Law Jasmine may choose whomever she wishes, regardless of their societal standing.
Some fairy tales that involve making wishes include "Aladdin and the Magic Lamp," where Aladdin uses a magical lamp to make wishes, and "The Fisherman and His Wife," where a fish grants wishes to the poor fisherman and his wife. Another example is "The Three Little Pigs," where the pigs each make a wish for protection from the Big Bad Wolf.
