No he cant survive which is really annoying. I know many people who think that they should bring out downloadable content for an alternate ending.
Actually its theoretically possible, there's about 14 soldiers at the end, and the mauser pistol holds 15 shots. but unfortuantly after you kill about 3 soldiers they all start shooting and it wont let you use dead eye. Hopefully they'll come out with an alternate ending.
