In Grave of the Fireflies Setsuko dies from malnutrition but why does Seita not take out money to but food for her until it is too late?

Setsuko's brother Seita does not realise that his sister is suffering from malnutrition until after he takes Setsuko to the doctor . Seita , only then , goes to the bank for money to purchase food for both himself and his sister . . . by then it is too late for Setsuko who dies as a result of malnutrition not neglect .
[This is both a wonderful film and a very sad one as well ; who can ever forget this film chronicling the plight of two innocent children caught up in a war?]
