The Maori are the indigenous race of Aotearoa (New Zealand). We still live here, though in greater numbers since the arrival of the white man, his foods, his ways and his diseases (flu epidemics, coughs and colds, alcohol, refined and junk foods, smoking etc) Some, such as the Waitaha tribe, say we have been here for a few thousand years, arriving from the east - Asia, etc... Although the accepted history says we have been here since around the 1100s AD.

The oldest dated settlements in New Zealand are both in the South Island. At Wairau Bar, (Marlborough) and at the mouth of the Shag River (Waihemo) in Otago. These date to c1300 AD.

There may be older settlements yet to be found, or others that have been buried by volcanic activity or destroyed by erosion.
