Kurt's father, Burt Hummel, is not dead. His mother, however, is. The show has not explained what caused the death of Kurt's mother, only that he misses her a lot. Burt, however, does have a record of poor health. Early in Season 2, he suffered a heart attack. In the current season, Season 4, he revealed that he suffers from early stages of prostate cancer. Ryan Murphy, writer and creator of Glee, has confirmed that Burt does not die.
