Earlier in the episode that Dale died, Carl found a walker in the swamp. After playing with it by throwing rocks, and pointing a gun at it, the walker broke loose and lunged at Carl. Carl ran away back to the farm. At another point earlier in the episode, Hershel says that some cattle broke the fence surrounding the farm.
Later that night the walker found its way into the farm and attacked Dale, after dale gave a speech about not wanting to live in a world that's lost its humanity (Symbolism?). Rick asked Hershel to perform surgery on Dales wound, but it was too big; Too deep. Daryl held ricks Magnum to Dales head and pulled the trigger to end Dales suffering.
