The same way that religion has taken over the world. here is the formula

1 - send a bunch of really religious people to somewhere where people are starving and living a "simple" or "leaver" lifestyle, the latter being an Ishmael reference.

2 - build a house of worship, or mission

3 - offer free religion to those who want it

4 - offer free food to those who want it

5 - make sure you don't give them the free food until they get the religion

6 - rinse and repeat

I am not saying that religion is negative, it depends on the will of the people. Plenty of very religious people believe in helping the needy and living in peace. But there are also many "religious" tenets that are barbaric and archaic and totally against humanity and humane treatment of human beings. But I digress.

You can look up more specific info on Wikipedia, but the truth is, they came, they spread religion, they used their resources to "corrupt" the locals and then did whatever they felt like with the region.

Any history teacher want to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about?
