The African buffalo does not live in the desert. It is primarily an animal of the grasslands where there is ample grass upon which it feeds. The American buffalo is not a true buffalo but is properly called a bison. At one time they were found on the eastern edge of the Chihuahuan Desert in parts of Texas and New Mexico. Most bison are now confined to preserves and national parks and no longer range over the central United States as they did 200 years ago.
