Luke and Lorelai get engaged, but Luke postpones the wedding after finding out that he has a daughter (April Nardini). Tired of waiting for Luke, Lorelai gives him an ultimatum: he must elope with her immediately or not marry her at all. When he refuses to elope, Lorelai immediately visits Christopher. Two days later, Luke is ready to elope, but Lorelai tells him about her night with Christopher and Luke and Lorelai break up. Lorelai and Christopher get married but soon decide to get divorced. At the end of the seventh (final) season, Luke and Lorelai get back together. However, they are never married on the show.

the last epside of season 4 all throug season 5 and 6 Lorelai and Luke kissed in the season finale of Season 4. They go on their first date in Season 5 Episode 3, titled 'Written in the Stars'. This is also the first episode that they sleep together. They date until 5.13, 'Wedding Bell Blues'. However, they begin dating again in 5.17, after reconciling in the last minute of the previous episode. Lorelai asks Luke to marry her in the season finale of Season 5; he answer her in the premiere of Season 6. They are engaged until the last episode of Season 6. Lorelai gives Luke an ultimatium to marry her now or never, and he doesn't say anything and lets her walk away. She gave Luke the Ultimatium because he had been putting off the wedding and because in 6.9 he realized that he had a daughter, April, and he didn't tell Lorelai about it for months; Lorelai found out about April by talking to her in the diner. After she found out about April, Luke would not let Lorelai be around April;thinking that April would prefer Lorelai to him. In the series finale, Luke and Lorelai kiss, ensuring their fans that they will always be together in the end.
