Old Jack is too old to continue the journey with the others and dies at the base camp. Dewey falls down a steep slope and it fatally injured. His teammates stay with him for awhile to show affection but eventually have to move on. Max however stays with Dewey until he dies and gets separated from the rest of the pack. Max however does reunite with the rest of them and the six remaining dogs get rescued.
