It could have been avoided if they would have hit it straight on with the front of the ship. The titanic s sister ship the HMHS Britannic was in something similar and did not sink but flooded the 4 front compartments the ship was able to be salvaged and never sank. If the captain would have hit it head on it would not have sank maybe alot of damage but not sank but because of the ice berg tearing into the side almost the length of the ship that's why it sank
The titanic disaster could have been prevented by alternating the thrust of the ship's wing screw to increase the turning response of the ship. Or they could have rammed the iceberg in front so not AL the compartments would have been flooding

No. Titanic did not have time to reverse her engines before the crash. There was less than 40 seconds and even modern ships with diesels take minutes to reverse at the best of times.

No. formal record show that the ship was steaming at top speed when the iceberg was sighted. because of the turning circle required the ship glanced the top of the ice burg but the damage was caused by the ice below the surface which cut through the hull.

The ship would have been capable of moving in reverse, but that still would not have prevented the crash. That's a lot of weight moving at a considerable speed through the water, and adding up to a lot of momentum - the ship would've continued moving forward for quite some distance before the reverse propeller blade brought it to a stop.

First, a large ship is not like a car. You can't just throw a steam ship into reverse! They would have needed to slow their knots to even begin to do that. Second, the only thing they could do was try to steer clear of it. But third, there just wasn't time. They were moving along at a good clip in a huge ship that couldn't slow, stop, or turn quickly.

As we've seen even in the last decade, large ferry sized boats up to cruise sized ships can get into dangers very fast and these ships even today can sink and result in loss of life.

It narrowly avoided colliding with a small steamship when leaving Southampton but sank when it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic.

Yes, but there was less than forty seconds to attempt a steering - and no time at all to stop.

There was less than 40 seconds between the sighting and the collision. Definitely not enough time. Even modern ships with diesels take minutes to reverse at the best of times.

Actually, the Titanic did try to evade it, however, the iceberg hit the side, letting water in. If the Titanic were to hit the iceberg head-on, it wouldn't have sank
