The Northern Lights can only be seen in darkness. They can be spotted in areas like northern Finland from late August through late April. The lights are usually at their peak in September and March.
Basically you can't see northern lights in anywhere during that time or if you can, it's really really rare. In northern countries sun stays for longer time in sky and it never actually gets dark enough to make aurora visible. You may have heard of ''Midnight sun''.
Helsinki is located in southern Finland so it's not common to see northern lights that south in wintertime either. There are still change and I managed actually to see aurora last winter in here.
If you really want to see Aurora, Finnish/Swedish/Norwegian Lapland is excellent choice for that. You can practically see northern lights every second day during winter. In bigger sun-storms the changes are even better.
