That is a difficult question to answer. Yes, two countries were the first to expirence the fighting that would be the first of the war. They were Germany and Poland. Things get complicated because Britain and France had promised to fight Germany if that nation invaded Poland. So Britain and France were brought into the war at the same time as Poland. Basically, if you have to answer that for a test or something, just say Poland and Germany. Unless you want to sound especially intelligent; a case for which I would suggest the longer more considered answer.
