World War II, there were two Battles of el Alamein. The most famous was late October to early November, 1942. It was the great turning point in the battle of North Africa. In Egypt, near the Mediterranean coast. The Brits turned back the Rommel led Nazis. A Nazi victory and they would have probably been able to completely encircle the Mediterranean. It was about this victory that Winston Churchill famously said: "Now this is not the end, nor is it even the beginning of the end, but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." He also said, perhaps in some exaggeration: "Before Alamein, we had no victory and after it we had no defeats".
