IXL is not a proper Roman Numeral. The problem is the IX could be 4. XL could be 40.

LIX would be 54

XLI would be 41. Another contributors opinion: The Roman numerals IXL = 39 because IXL = -1-10+50 = 39. In Roman numerals all positive numerals are written on the right hand side from left to right in descending order while all negative numerals are written on the left hand side from right to left also in descending order. The Roman numeral system came from the Etruscan numeral system with some modifications. The Etruscans, who once ruled the Romans, wrote their positive numerals from right to left in descending order. Answer IXL is not a correct method of writing a Roman numeral as according to the website Algebra.com "I may preceed V or X but it should never preceed L." IXL is open to misinterpretation as it might mean 11 less than 50 which is 39 or could be interpreted as 9 less than 50 which is 41. The accepted ways of writing 39 XXXIX or 41 XLI are not open to misinterpretation. By the way LIX would be 59 not 54, which would be LIV.
IX is nine. There is no IXL.
