If it were valid, XIIC would be 88 because:

X=10, I=1, C=100 and any smaller number written before a larger one should be deducted from the larger number - so, 10+1+1=12 and 100-12=88.

However, 88 would actually be written LXXXVIII (where L=50 and V=5) which is 50+10+10+10+5+1+1+1 as it was the custom to have only one instance of a smaller number before a larger one.

For example, 90 is XC (100-10) but 80 is LXXX (50+10+10+10)

and 99 is IX (100-1) but 98 is LXLVIII (50+(50-10)+5+1+1+1).

However, they did sometimes break the rules - IIC is much easier to write for 98!
