Well, the saints in the Old Testament looked toward the promise of a savior (and his crucifixial sacrifice), and we, as church age Christians, look back to the cross. Another point would be, the rules (Ten Commandments included) that the Jews adhered to, reflected God's love toward man as much as His grace does to us. A good parent sets ground rules for the kids to protect them, and God was certainly the One who set that precedent.
