Einstein was born German but became a Swiss citizen in 1901 following his studies in Aarau and Zurich. In 1911 he took on Austrian citizen as a precondition of his appointment as full professor at Karl-Ferdinand University in Prague - which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. In 1914 he was appointed Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Physical Institute and Professor in the University of Berlin and became a German citizen in 1914. He remained in Berlin until 1933 when he renounced his citizenship in objection to the Nazi government and emigrated to America to take the position of Professor of Theoretical Physics at Princeton. He became a United States citizen in 1940 and retired from his post in 1945, dying in the US in 1955.
