In Europe, nearly all humans had dark skin until about 10,000 years ago. Scientists think that light skin in East Asia evolved separately, I'm not sure when. The loss of hair and invention of clothing meant there was less skin to catch the sun, and darker people had to eat healthier to get the same levels of vitamin D. White cavemen would have had a slight advantage, and any slight advantage is enough for evolution to work it's magic.
