Add to that, the reality of the customer oftentimes not having a scheduler on staff, so the ink technician has to be a kind of magician, ready, willing and able to make ink on the fly for jobs that weren't supposed to be run for weeks down the road, but hopscotched up the schedule because the company might not have the right kind of paper or dies for jobs scheduled earlier. The job also involves a lot of call-ins for that reason, so work-life balance isn't the best unless you land a position in a company utilizing more than one tech. Also you cannot have too much aged inventory on hand so the job involves a lot of sweating and praying that you'll have enough ink to provide that day when your schedule completely changes. Companies don't like to wait a week on ink deliveries. And no matter how hard you try and how hard you work, someone further up the food chain will throw you under the bus in a heartbeat if they screw something up. If you can deal with the politics, are a self-starter and can work independently, it's a good job. You'll never get rich being an ink tech but there is a fair amount of stability within the profession. If things don't work out with company A, finding a job at company B usually isn't difficult.
