the ink tecnician is in charge of the color matching center

Edit: Edit: To elaborate further, this is a typical job description for an ink technician:

Duties are as follows:

* Weigh, blend, QC, and deliver in a productive, efficient, and safe manner press-ready inks to meet the demands of the customer's production schedule.

* Follow appropriate quality control and inspection process for inks to ensure quality to presses.

* Prepare and maintain accurate records including quality controlled( visc.,X-Rite, recorded ink batch ticket in grey folder) finished ink getting out to press, to meet production dates per customer's schedule, ink adjustments at press, the level of totes and drums on the dispenser and complaints as directed by the supervisor.

* Assist with job scheduling and ink estimations for jobs going to press.

* Assist with maintaining the work off ink process by regulating use and storage.

* Assist in the ordering process by reviewing the long term schedule to predict ink usage and identify any special orders (solvent inks, blends, and coatings).

* Make sure that the office, equipment and floors are cleaned and properly maintained up to the standards the supervisor has put into place.

* Perform other related responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

* Review quality of product delivered to customer for conformance vs. specification.

* Review raw materials and suitability of finished matches on press.

* Review suitability of press returns ink for recycle.

* Perform ink estimating for jobs going to press.

Qualifications:

* Must have strong communications skills and a working knowledge of MS Excel.

* An associate's degree or higher is preferred and a minimum of a high school degree is required

* The ideal candidate will have 3 years experience in ink color matching, pressroom and work-off formulation with solvent and water inks. Narrow web experience is desired.

* Strong emphasis on the ability to identify, set and review quality standards for customers.

Add to that, the reality of the customer oftentimes not having a scheduler on staff, so the ink technician has to be a kind of magician, ready, willing and able to make ink on the fly for jobs that weren't supposed to be run for weeks down the road, but hopscotched up the schedule because the company might not have the right kind of paper or dies for jobs scheduled earlier. The job also involves a lot of call-ins for that reason, so work-life balance isn't the best unless you land a position in a company utilizing more than one tech. Also you cannot have too much aged inventory on hand so the job involves a lot of sweating and praying that you'll have enough ink to provide that day when your schedule completely changes. Companies don't like to wait a week on ink deliveries. And no matter how hard you try and how hard you work, someone further up the food chain will throw you under the bus in a heartbeat if they screw something up. If you can deal with the politics, are a self-starter and can work independently, it's a good job. You'll never get rich being an ink tech but there is a fair amount of stability within the profession. If things don't work out with company A, finding a job at company B usually isn't difficult.
