Ice chest. Ice man delivered fresh ice every couple of days In holes in the ground - cooler than above surface
In meteorology, "ice days" are typically defined as days when the maximum temperature does not rise above 0°C (32°F). In May, ice days can occur in regions with colder climates, particularly in the northern parts of the Northern Hemisphere, but they are relatively rare. Specific dates vary by location and year, depending on local weather patterns and conditions. Generally, ice days in May are more common in the early part of the month.

It worked provided the ice man came. Before the ice box perishable vegetables were stored underground, where it was cooler.
