The US government broke all treaties with the American Indian. They viewed the Indian as poor, simple savages and therefore thought it was fine to not honor the treaties. Surely, the ones who negotiated the treaties probably felt they would be honored. It was a case where the US government felt superior and untouchable and they wanted the land and minerals , so they took them.

As a direct quote from Federal Judge Joe Fish, Northern District of Texas: "The United States has violated every single treaty it has made with Indians, and one more time is not going to matter." This is in agreement with Congressional Action, as well as admitted by the US Bureau of Indian Affairs - so it is safe to say at least 4,000 treaties (number of treaties in Cohen's handbook on Federal Indian Law)
The Native Americans were forced to give up more and more of their land.
Native Americans in the US did not due well as the westward expansion continued. White settlers were in constant conflict with Native Tribes and treaties signed by the US government with Native Tribes were broken all the time. The US wanted to not eliminate Natives, but rather to have them settle in reservations. This would of course infringe upon their freedoms. Basically, white settlers saw Natives as obstacles to their mining and farming interests. It must ne noted that Native Americans throughout the Western Hemisphere all suffered under the European invasions of the New World.

The United States government supported this, in that they set up reservation for the Native Americans. They then bought the land from them and promised to protect them. The US government also wrote and signed many treaties to help the Native Americans. Sadly though this didnt last long. Because the settlers wanted the Native Americans land. This caused the Native Americans to fight back. They were fighting not only for their land, but for their resources. But mostly in order to keep their traditions. Thanks I hope that helps!
