Basically the monks were afraid the vikings (their biggest enemies) or any other raiders would rob them from their valuables. The viking were great traders but also good robbers. So for protection they build a tall stone structure, around the height of 25m to 40 m to be safe. There were 4 slit windows on top of the building, and a look out would look through every window to see if no one is coming, but if someone was trying to attack then he would basically ring the bell to warn everyone. The doors of the buildings were also high up so it would be hard for the enemies to get the valuables or get inside
They were built as a place of safety from raiding Vikings. When Vikings were coming, the people would take their belongings and go to the round towers and into them. The round towers had their entrances high up. After people went in, they would pull up the ladder making it difficult for the Vikings to reach them or get into the tower.

He did get it back in the end and by this time engineers had realized that round towers had more strength then square ones because an old medieval tactic was to dig out the four corners of a square tower and it would collapse but with a circular tower there where no corners to dig out.
