H.G. Wells came to believe the Nazi version of socialism was not socialism at all, but rather crude fascism and genocidal prejudice. He became a strong critic of Hitler and the Nazi policies, leading to Goebbels ordering that his books be burned because they were allegedly anti-German. Wells was also included on a list of intellectuals who would be put to death once Germany defeated England.
