Hey there :) Okay, let's get some things straight about this first. One, S.E.Hinton NEVER wrote in the book a thing about Vietnam and the war. AT ALL. She never wrote down on a piece of paper that Soda goes to Vietnam, so therefore he doesn't.

Secondly, when i found this out, i was devastated but then i found Hinton's email address and emailed her, asking if it was true, if she really said that, why she said it etc etc. Well, she replied, and told me that she only said that to help Rob Lowe (he plays Sodapop) that to help him developed his character more quickly, that he doesn't die over there, that nothings set in stone and for us to make our own future for the characters.

I hope this helps answer your question. Just remember Soda & Steve NEVER go to Vietnam, Soda NEVER dies, and that nothing is set in stone. :)

Just keep telling yourself 'it NEVER happens' because it never does :)
