Though this may not be the complete answer you're looking for, I'll give it a go... It most likely goes back to the the defeat of the Irish at the Battle of the Boyne by the forces of William of Orange.
If anyone has any further information, or can further clarify, please do.
Answeri am an Irish catholic, living in the north and the reason i don't wear orange is quite simple. the Irish flag is green, white and orange. green representing catholics, orange representing protestants and white represets a peace between them ( but that is never going to happen, believe me ) over the years the loyalists paramilitaries and unionist governments have adopted the colour orange and used it and parades, eg; the orangemen, and the 12th of July. any catholic who would wear the colour orange would be viewed as a protestant as the colours you wear ( football jerseys, Rugby jerseys etc ) are a sign of your religion and side on the conflict. so i don't know any catholic person who would put themselves at risk like that or risk being called a traitor. AnswerI'm Irish and I don't have any political views regarding the colour orange - I just wear it because it's my favourite colour. AnswerI'm northern Irish also, and my fav colour is orange..... Answer"I believe in.. a concept of Irishness that is not simply Catholic, Gaelic and Nationalist… in Ireland as the homeland of Orange and Green… creating a warm place in our State for those of the Orange tradition is not capable of being achieved overnight." Orange can represent a variety of things on a flag. On the flag of Sri Lanka orange represents Hinduism. The national color of Netherlands is orange, which used to be the predominant color on their flag. Answer #2: Since the category is "Irish History", the orange on the Irish flag is to recognize the "Orangemen" (protestants) who live in Ireland. The green is the original inhabitants and the white symbolizes the desire for peace between them. (and three cheers to them for this!)
As I understand it Orange was the color that was used to represent Sir William of orange an Irish Catholic hating protestant. I have never seen or heard of anyone wearing orange on St. Patrick's Day.
orange Irish are mainly protestants who see themselves as british, they are descended from English and scottish planters who arrived in Ireland in the 17th century. The meaning behind orange is the orange order which celebrates the battle of the boyne in 1690 when king William of orange (protestant) defeated king James (catholic). Green Irish are mostly roman catholic and see themselves as Irish. They are descended from Irish natives who have always lived in Ireland. Green is the general colour of Ireland and this is why they are called the green Irish.
The Irish flag features green, white and orange. These colors run in three consecutive vertical lines which are evenly balanced.
