There is not one explanation alone as to why individual citizens in the Union believed that the war had started. Abraham Lincoln supported fighting the American Civil War to preserve the Union because he believed that it would be better if the United States remained united instead of separating into two countries. Northern abolitionists supported the war because if the Union won, then there would be little obstruction in passing anti-slavery legislation.
