It was changed by Aton, who is an Egyptian god.

He was forced to change it by the priesthood, to disassociate himself from his father's worship and views on the sun disk, Aton. He was to revere the god Amen instead.

Okay... with all my answers i give a long description. If you want the short and sweet answer, it's in bold. I recommend reading the entire answer so that you get the idea, though. The bold doesn't really explain much...

Tutankhaten was Tut's first name. Tutankhaten means "Living image of the Aten". Aten was the god Tut's father, Anhenaten, worshiped. He wasn't a big fan of his father, so he changed his name to Tutankhamun which means "Living image of Amun". Amun was a god many Egyptians worshiped. That really showed his rejection towards his father.

There are quite a few theories involved with this.

Some sources say that the Priesthood of Amun took Tutankaten and changed his name, while other sources say he chose to change his name to show the transition from his father's (Akhenaten) monotheistic faith, back to the traditional polytheistic faith.

The Golden Throne found in the antichamber of the tomb shows the change between the two, but allows historians to see that he still maintained the ways of his father.

King Tut's name was Tutankhamun. Today we call him "Tut" because it is easier to say.

He didn't change his name much. He was born as tutankhaton, which meant "atons living picture" and he changed name to tutankhamon, which meant "amons living picture".

King Tut changed his name because he didn't like his father's god for whom he was named for. He changed his name to honor the all mighty god, Ra
