In the 1920Ã?s progressive politics were weak because the people were skeptical of liberal changes that were taking place. They wanted things to stay the way they were use to. This left few people to support the liberal changes needed.

There are many different branches of progressive decline in the 1920s. I'll tell you about three of them.

Business:

-Buying on credit became very popular but make economy vulnerable

- the railroad industry lost momentum due to cars

- females took up jobs in the cities (more opportunities), therefore turning from more "maternal" jobs

-The National Women's Party gained no success in their fight for an equal right amendment

- author H.L. Mencken ridiculed democracy, prohibition, marriage, and puritans, all of which are important beliefs to progressivists.

- Florida's real estate boom ended with a hurricane

- Stock Market downfall due to buying stock with small down payments.

- in 1921 the national debt had increased by about 22 billion dollars since 1914

- Esch-Cummins Transportation Act of 1920- encouraged private control of railroads

-Fordney- McCumber Tariff law- tariffs boosted to 38.5%

Labor:

- Adkins v. Children's Hospital case took away protection of women in the workplace

- anti trust laws ignored by big industries; Secretary Hoover even encouraged businesses, not government, to regulate business.

- Railway Labor Board made a wage cut of 12% in 1922, provoking a two month long strike.

Immigrants:

- during the red scare (an anti- Russian period), 249 alien radicals were deported on the Buford, being relocated to Russia.

- Emergency Quota Act- said 3% of each nationality could enter

- Immigration Act- ^ but 2%

(i would google the 2 acts because im a little sketchy about the validity of what i wrote!)

- diversity among immigrants was lost to the glitz & glamour of radio and movies.

I hope this was helpful! :)

Politics goes in cycles, and the 1920's followed the sacrifices of WW1.Known as "The Roaring 20's" for the displays of wealth and stock market excesses, the rights of workers, child safety, and and worker safety took a back seat to how people were enthralled by Al Capone, john Dilllinger, and the society of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby."
