Poland had been a country before World War I, though it was later divided up between Germany, Austria, and Russia. After the war, President Wilson wished to recreate Poland because of his belief in self-determination, the idea that everyone should be able to choose their country. Also, there were many ethnic Poles in the United States who brought the issue to the president's attention.

Poland was an independent country until 1795 when it was partitioned by Russia, Austria, and Prussia.

Poles fought for their freedom for 123 years.

The end of ww1 was a very lucky situation for Poland because all three opressive states lost the war:

Austria and Germany (Prussia was a core state of Germany) were defeated.

Russia was in the anarchy of Soviet Revolution.

Poland was first overrun by the Nazis during WW II and then by the USSR in the later phase of the war. Poland remained a Soviet satellite until the fall of communism in 1990.

Following World War Two, the USSR kept its troops in Poland and created there a communist nation. There was little resistance as the war had destroyed its army.
