Egyptian Pharaohs often tried to erase all traces of previous rulers to let anyone know that they were in charge. They also didn't want people rebelling because of past rulers for examples the last ruler was better to the people, the last ruler created a better army or other things that Pharaohs of the time didn't want to be threaten or compared to. Another reason could be like democrats and Republicans do in these days, on president usually gets 8 years in, creates what he wants then an opposite party member comes in the restarted everything. Then everyone is screwed for 4 years until things are resorted out. So what I was trying to say with that is a Pharaoh could erase all traces of the past Pharaoh due to disagreement of punishment, rules and other similar concepts. Thank you(:
Hatshepsut, who was a female pharaoh in ancient Egypt, did not deface her own tomb. Instead, it is believed that after her death, her successor Thutmose III defaced many of her statues and monuments in an attempt to erase her memory from history and assert his own authority as Pharaoh. This was a common practice by ancient rulers to erase the memory of previous rulers whom they deemed illegitimate or unworthy.
Thutmose III tried to erase Hatshepsut, his stepmother and aunt (actually a co-pharaoh with himself), from history.
The conquistador Hernán Cortés built the city of Mexico City (proper name "Ciudad de México) in order to erase all traces of the Aztec rule.

He was known for his embrace of monotheism. His successors attempted to erase all memory of him.
