The question is incorrect. Great Britain began to send its prisoners to Australia in 1788.However, Britain could no longer send its prisoners to America because of the American War of Independence, in which America essentially severed its ties with Britain.
Before the American Revolutionary War, British prisoners were sold as indentured servants to work on American farms. While an individual could indenture himself for 7 years in exchange for passage across the ocean, a prisoner's indenture could last 30 years. During the Revolutionary War, prisoners made up the bulk of the British army. After that war, England needed a place to send prisoners. Australia was available. Prisoners were sent from jails in England to prisons in Australia. After the prisoners served their sentences, they were released from prison in Australia. They would never return to England. Their relatives in England would never hear from them again. It was as if once they walked on board the boat they went to their deaths. It was possible for a person in England to write to a person in Australia and get an answer. However, it required an address. Without knowing where they were, it was impossible to contact them. They were dead to their relatives back in England.
The Nazis used post cards from the concentration prisoners to find more Jews. __ Most of the postcards would not have been sent to any Jews in hiding. This would have been foolish. Most of the postcards, that were sent to Jews, were sent to addresses in Ghettos. Some postcards were supplied to the concentration camp prisoners to use to acknowledging the receipt of red cross parcels. Others had a more sinister purpose. Some prisoners had to send them to relatives still in the ghetos, what was written on them dictated by the SS. They basically said I am fine, I've arrived fine and then the writers were sent for extermination. It is thought they were done to try and hide the genocide from the general population. Sometimes the postcards were just that. Quick notes sent to people outside the camp to let them know they were still alive.
Three words: Bay Of Pigs. This is only because he chose not to send bombers ahed of the land invasion. He did this because he knew that if America did send the bombers Castro would ask for the help of the Soviet Union and that could of had made the cold war not so cold anymore. Probably thermonuclear hot war to be exact; if it led to it of course.
Ghost Soldier is by Hampton Sides and is about the account of the most successful rescue mission during WW2. A movie was made from this book with the title "The Raid". The story centers on the American prisoners of war that were held in a camp in the Philippines. These prisoners were remnants of those captured at Bataan early in the war. Many had been taken off the islands but approximately 500 remained. The Americans were advancing through Philippines and were getting close to the POW camp. They were afraid the Japs would kill or try to move the prisoners out, both of which could result in their deaths. They devised a plan to send a Ranger team behind enemy lines to attack the camp and rescue the prisoners. This was the most successful mission that involved the Rangers during WW2. The book is written with one chapter relating the events of the prisoners and the next chapter the events of the Rangers. This goes back and forth until the chapter of the raid. The book has a lot of great facts of this part of the campaign. The movie ends with actual WW2 film footage of the prisoners returning from the raid and their processing back to the US.
I remember this: It was in May of 1980. Called the Murielle boat people.
