1. The Puritans wanted to escape from England (where Catholicism was the dominant religion) because they were being persecuted for not committing themselves to the king and the church of england.
2. Some people (merchants especially) wanted to do business in America and make a fortune off of trading.
3. Fugitives, poor people and young adults liked the sense of adventure and wanted to explore new land and see what it has to offer them.

Some were Church of England, some were Catholic, and there were Jewish settlers. Others believed in God but didn't attend churches. Just as today there were many different people and religions in the colonies.
Settlers to these colonies came for religious freedom. The also came to take advantage of the economic opportunities. The rich soil made farming and raising livestock favorable in these colonies. the rivers supported shipping and trade.
