The baseball cap was originally invented in Europe somewhere in the west. The first baseball caps had a strap of cow hide to keep them on. It is thought that they were first made in the 1890's.
Because it was origanly called baseball and they needed a ball so they called it a baseball!!
You can, but most players don't. If the helmet is too big, wearing your cap under it is a good way to make it fit better though.
History has not recorded that information although it is known that a team in the 1860s called the Brooklyn Excelsiors wore caps that looked somewhat like today's caps in that they had a rounded top. There were no rules back then that stated players had to wear a cap so most did not wear one although some players would wear a straw hat with a large brim to shade their face from the sun.
Fitted caps, as we know them today, began to gain popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, particularly with Major League Baseball teams. They were designed to fit the wearer's head size without an adjustable strap, providing a sleek, streamlined look. The New Era Cap Company, which started producing caps in 1920, played a significant role in popularizing fitted caps, especially with its introduction of the iconic 59FIFTY model in 1954. Over the decades, fitted caps have evolved into a staple in both sports and street fashion.
