The Yankees catcher from 1980-1984 was Rick Cerone. Their catcher in 1985 and 1986 was Ron Hassey. It was again Rick Cerone in 1987. In 1988, the Yankees catcher was Joel Skinner. And finally in 1989, it was Bob Geren.

Thurman Munson did about 90% of the catching for the Yankees in the 1970's, until his very tragic and premature death on August 2, 1979. There were other catchers on those teams that would play here and there, but Munson was their primary catcher.

Thurman Munson was the starter from 1970 through August of 1979 when he lost his life in a plane crash.

Backups included Jerry Narron, Brad Gulden, Mike Heath, Fran Healy, Elrod Hendricks, Rick Dempsey, John Ellis, and Jake Gibbs.

In 1959, Yogi Berra was the Yankees starting catcher. From 1960-1965, it was Elston Howard. Several backups included Johnny Blanchard, Jake Gibbs, Doc Edwards and Bob Schmidt. Yogi Berra was also a backup to Howard.
