Isis' parents were Nut, the Goddess of the sky, and Geb, the God of the earth. Now, in Egyptian art, one can often tell which God/dess a painting is by looking at what they have on their head. Isis is most often depicted with a crown and a vulture or a kite (seen as protective parents and messengers to the underworld) until the later period, where she adopts Hathor's solar disk and horn headress. Nut is depicted with a jar or vase upon her head. In the vase is water, referring to her role as a goddess of the sky. The vase may have also been a symbol of the uterus, fulfiling her symbolisim as a mother. In other depictions, she is shown in profile, with her body flat above the ground, her arms and legs at 90 degree angles to her body to show that she is a sky goddess and forms the pillars of heaven, which hold it up. In some art, she is painted blue with stars all over her body. Geb, her husband, is often depicted below the latter form of Nut. He reclines with his knees bent; this represents an earth that is not flat, but has rolling hills and valleys. Nut and Geb are the parents of Osiris, Isis, Seth/Set, and Nephthys. In ancient Egypt, the ruler married his sister as kingship was passed through the female line. While many people may be confused with the sun-sky mother/earth father motif in Egypt rather then the one we are more familiar with in the modern era and with the majority of other ancient religions (sun-sky father/earth mother) we must remember that in the very earliest religions, the Goddesses were far more important and powerful than the male Gods (Women give birth=source of life=more important to the survival of the species than men, at least in that era). Isis was worshiped more than her husband; In Sumer, Innana was queen of heaven and earth and her husband was a lowly shepherd (and the ruler of hell was a female); the Celts had Arianthood for the sky, the Japanese had Amaterasu, and on.
