Clement Richard Attlee was a British politician. He reached the peak of his political career when he served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1945 to 1951, for the Labor Party, of which he also served as the leader from 1945 to 1951. As Prime Minister he created the National Health Service and nationalized public utilities and industries, such as railways and coal mining. He is still regarded as one of the most successful British Prime Ministers of all time.
Clement Atlee served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1945 to 1951. He had previously served as deputy Prime Minister in Winston Churchill's Wartime coalition government. In the Parliamentary elections of 1945, Atlee's Labour Party won a shocking victory over Churchill's Conservative Party. His government was largely responsible for turning Britain into the European socialist "nanny state" that it became. He also oversaw the dissolution of the British Empire and the independence of India. Labour lost the general election of 1951 and Winston Churchill and the Conservative Party returned to power.
