Although many people believe the first American Flag was hand stitched by Betsy Ross, the story may very well just be a legend. The story is that the original flag was made in 1776, by a group consisting of George Washington, Robert Morris and George Ross, a relative of Betsy. He allegedly visited her and expressed the urgent need for a flag. Betsy accepted the job and manufactured the flag, somewhat altering the committeeâ??s original design by changing the stars from six-point two five-point. This story did not come about until 34 years after her death when her last living grandson made this claim via letter to the Pennsylvania Historical Society. There were no other corroborating witnesses or information.
