The Selection Committee began ranking the #1 and giving one of the four a number one overall seed in 2004. Only once in those four years has a number one overall seed one the tournament- Florida in 2007. In 2007, Florida was the number one overall seed and won the tournament. In 2006, Duke was the number one overall seed and lost in the Sweet Sixteen to LSU. In 2005, Illinois was the number one overall seed and lost in the championship to UNC. In 2004, Kentucky was the number one overall seed and lost in the Second Round to UAB.
The University of Louisville, who was the number one overall seed in the tournament, and Western Kentucky University were the only two. Kentucky played in the NIT Tournament.
