In 1972, Shirley Chisholm made a symbolic bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, becoming the first African American and the first woman whose name was placed in nomination at the convention of either major party for the office of president.

She represented New York's 12th Congressional District from 1969 - 1983; making for a total of seven terms. Mrs. Chisholm also ran for president on the Democratic ticket in 1972.
