John Dunlop is best known for being the inventor of the pneumatic tyre.
Born in Scotland in 1840, Dunlop was the one who developed the first practical pneumatic (inflatable) tyre, doing so in 1887. this first tyre was invented for his son's tricycle. After testing it, Dunlop applied for a patent, which was granted on 7 December 1888.
Unfortunately, the patent was declared invalid since as it was determined that fellow Scotsman, Robert Thomson, has actually patented the concept first, in 1847. This was a mere formality, however, as Dunlop still managed to build the company that now bears his name as a result of developing the pneumatic tyre for commercial use.
