We see this behaviour in our primate cousins (those with opposable thumbs) on a regular basis, so it's only natural to draw the conclusion that we did the same. Thus the accidental discovery that mixing with water to make dough, which would dry in the sun would have inevitably led to experimentation with applied heat, would have led to the invention of bread.
Archaeological finds concur with this, with the advent of the wheel happening around the same time - in fact, the wheel may have originally been used as a grinding tool, before an accidental discovery that it could be used to transport the worlds very first processed goods.
