The Western Hemisphere's land masses, the North and South American continents and the Carribean Islands, were "officially" discovered by Europeans starting in 1492, when Christopher Columbus, an Italian sailing for the crown of Spain, and seeking a Western route to Asia (then called "The Indies"), made landfall in the Carribean. This is why the Europeans named the indigenous peoples "Indians".

Even that, however, ignores the people from Asia, who are thought to have been the progenitors of the Native Americans, and who travelled to the Northwest coast of North America eons ago, when there was still a land bridge.
