The US was in fact never discovered. It was created, not discovered, on the North American continent, which had already been discovered over 250 years earlier.

The Western Hemisphere's land masses, the North and South American continents and the Carribean Islands, were "officially" discovered by Europeans starting in 1492, when Christopher Columbus, an Italian sailing for the crown of Spain, and seeking a Western route to Asia (then called "The Indies"), made landfall in the Carribean. Columbus was convinced, in fact, that he had indeed found the Western route to The Indies, and did not realize that he had reached land in the Western Hemisphere. This is why the Europeans named the indigenous peoples "Indians".

However, Vikings sailing from Scandanavia discovered, and briefly settled on, the North American coast , in what is now Labrador and Newfoundland, Canada, in the late 10th or early 11th century (late 900s or early 1000s). Even that, however, ignores the people from Asia, who are thought to have been the progenitors of the Native Americans, and who travelled to the Northwest coast of North America eons ago, when there was still a land bridge.
