Alexander fought and lost an epic battle against King Porus, who ruled a region in the Punjab - the Battle of Hydaspes in 326 BCE. Porus was greatly impressed by Alexander for his bravery in battle, and used Alexander to suppress regions to his south for him and gave him safe passage back to his own kingdom.
