Originally inaccessible to North America's first colonists, then later a western county of the state of Virginia, Kentucky was slowly but surely colonized by different settlers of European descent. In the same manner as much of the rest of North America was colonized, Kentucky slowly grew in size and importance (achieving statehood in 1792) as more and more 'Americans' crossed the Appalachians in search of new homes and greater prosperity.
