In 1608, a year after the English founded Jamestown, Samuel de Champlain sailed up the St, Lawrence River, to establish a fort at a point the Native Americans called kebec, which meant a narrowing of the waters. Champlain had heard the Algonquian word and named the settlement Quebec.
