John F Kennedy's vice president, Lyndon Baines Johnson(aka LBJ), succeeded JFK after he was assassinated.

JFK was pronounced dead in Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas after succumbing to wounds he sustained from an assassin's rifle, in 1963 November 22. Lyndon Baines Johnson became the 36th President of the United States one hour and thirty-eight minutes after. The ceremony occurred on Air Force One in Dallas' Love Field by Sarah T. Hughes, a federal judge. The ceremony was conducted in the presence of his wife, Lady Bird Johnson, the widow of President Kennedy, and other government officials.

LBJ was re-elected to the Presidency in 1964 over Barry Goldwater, the GOP candidate, but who declined to run in 1968, as his popularity was limited due to the ever increasing anti-Vietnam War feeling. His VP, Hubert Humphrey, was nominated by the Democrats, but was defeated by Republican Richard Nixon.

Vice President Lyndon Johnson became the US president after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He was sworn in on the airplane that brought the body of President Kennedy back to Washington DC. His wife and Kennedy's wife were also on that flight.
